PROJECT REPORT / TT-04

ToadTrackr

A rules-aware scorekeeper for the traditional Sussex pub game of Toads.

Game scorekeeper
01 / FIELD NOTES

The project

ToadTrackr replaces the chalkboard arithmetic in a game of Sussex Toads with a simple shared scoring screen designed to work equally well on a phone or desktop.

The app understands the parts of the game that make a generic score counter awkward: players count down from 31, the opening turns use two and then three toads before moving to four, players can throw fewer toads near the finish, and the score must finish exactly.

Scoring is based on the final state of the turn rather than blindly adding each throw as it happens. That matters because a later toad can knock an earlier one off the table or into the hole and completely change the result.

Engineering focus

A small application where the interesting engineering is in translating an unusual real-world ruleset into a UI that feels simpler than the rules underneath it.
